A bike isn’t just for summer. With the right gear and a little preparation, you can ride all year round, from the trails of Gërmia Park in Prishtina to the Rugova Gorge. This guide covers what you need for each season and how to keep your bike in good shape.
Essential gear for every ride
- Helmet: on every ride, even a short one.
- Front and rear lights: they make you visible even during the day.
- Pump and repair kit: spare inner tube, multi-tool and tyre levers.
- Water bottle with a frame-mounted holder.
- Gloves: better grip on the handlebars and protection if you fall.
- Lock: whenever you leave your bike in town.
Spring: back on the road
After the winter break, your bike needs a check-up.
- Check tyre pressure, brakes and chain; clean and lube the chain.
- Dress in layers: a technical base layer that wicks sweat and a light windproof jacket, as mornings are still cool.
- Start with short rides and build up your distance gradually.
- The weather changes quickly, so carry a light rain jacket.
Summer: heat and sun
Summer is the season for long rides, but the heat calls for care.
- Ride early in the morning or in the evening and avoid the hottest hours of the day.
- Choose light, quick-drying clothing and padded shorts for comfort on long distances.
- Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen and a well-ventilated helmet.
- Drink regularly, even when you’re not thirsty; take two bottles on long rides.
- Ride ideas: the Rugova Gorge or the quiet village roads of the Dukagjini region.
Autumn: rain, leaves and shorter days
- Lights become essential, as it gets dark early.
- Wear clothing with reflective details so drivers can see you from a distance.
- Wet leaves are slippery: slow down before corners and brake earlier.
- Mudguards protect you from water and mud.
- After every wet ride, wipe the chain and lube it again.
Winter: warm and visible
- Follow the three-layer rule: a thermal base layer, a warm mid layer and an outer jacket that blocks wind and water.
- Protect your hands, feet and head: winter gloves, thick socks, a neck warmer and a thin cap under your helmet.
- When there’s ice or snow, choose cleared roads or keep training indoors on an exercise bike.
- Road salt damages the chain and metal parts, so clean your bike more often.
- Keep your lights on at all times.
Year-round maintenance
- Tyre pressure: check every week.
- Brakes and chain: check every month.
- Full service: at least once a year, ideally in spring.
