Waterproofing test
In a lab, the shoe is submerged in water up to mid-height on a mechanical arm that flexes to simulate a number of steps. With this test, we can determine the time and number of km that the boot can walk while staying dry. Then we confirm in the field or in the rain, that the shoe lives up to its promises.
What size should I choose?
The most important thing is to try on several sizes and styles of boots to find the one that fits you best! You can choose a larger size to avoid hitting your toes on descents, as long as your foot is well supported. Tip: Keep your toenails short and, before a long descent, check that the laces are tight enough to prevent your foot from sliding forward inside the boot.
BUYING GUIDETrying on shoes
Some Decathlon stores have a testing itinerary.
1. Try on both shoes, standing, with the socks you wear for outdoor walks.2. Tighten the laces, being careful to balance the tightness correctly.3. Check two points:
- the heel does not lift in front of the shoe when walking uphill.- the foot does not slip and the toes do not press the front when descending.4. Try several sizes and models.
Break them in gradually to adapt to your foot.
Optimize your shoes' capabilities by replacing the shoe insoles
The original sole of your shoes is designed to fit most feet. Changing the insole can provide:
1. Improved support: Some insoles are pre-molded or reinforced to better support the arch of the foot.2. More comfort: Shoe insoles can also offer warmth and/or cushioning.3. Longer life: Restore the support and comfort of your shoes by replacing the insole every season.
Which socks?
A waterproof shoe will be less breathable than a non-waterproof shoe. Socks like MH500, MH520 and MH900 with a medium upper are therefore preferable to wick away sweat and reduce friction.
Product design: our expertise
Our global design center Quechua is located in Passy, at the foot of Mont-Blanc in Haute Savoie. This location makes it a real meeting place for our teams (designers, product managers, engineers, etc.) and outdoor sports enthusiasts. A great asset for designing your mountain hiking products and offering you all our expertise.
How should you care for your shoes?
- Let them air dry.- Remove dry mud with a stiff brush.
- Clean marks using a brush and a little warm water
- Let them dry
- Spray with a waterproofing product to restore water resistance to the upper.
What is the frequency and intensity of hiking?
We have classified our products according to performance and characteristics for 3 levels of mountain hiking:- occasional: about ten hikes per year lasting about 3 to 4 hours, less than 10 km and less than 700 m altitude gain.- regular: about 20 outings per year. 4 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km, altitude gain of 700 to 1200 m per hike.- intensive: more than 20 times a year. More than 6 hours, more than 20 km, 1200 to 2000 m altitude gain per hike.
Outsole with external contact
New high-performance outsole with our new exclusive rubber compound developed by our experts. More gripping, more durable. The outsole is designed for better grip using 3D simulations and then tested in the lab to evaluate the grip coefficient on different surfaces and conditions. Field tests in the mountains allow us to make the final evaluation with a panel of testers.
Extended waterproofing
To keep your feet dry, we advise you to use a waterproof gaiter or mini-gaiter to protect the upper part of your boots and prevent water, gravel and sand from entering.
We recommend re-waterproofing twice a year with a waterproofing agent to restore waterproofness and prevent stains.
How to prevent blisters
Blisters usually develop when the skin is weakened by friction. To prevent them from occurring, we recommend the following:- Choose a shoe according to your size.- Wear appropriate socks
- Tie and tighten your shoes properly.- Do not hesitate to adjust the lacing during activity, especially before starting an ascent or descent. Wear the shoes on a short trip for the first use.
